The Science Behind LGG & BB-12

At BetterGuts we love the science, and we could talk about it all day. Both of our flagship microbes have so much research behind them you could write a book about them, and some people have, as these microbes feature in many books about probiotics. But we like to keep things clear and precise, to cut through the noise and show you the science without the fluff, so you can see the backing behind these powerful microbes.

Here you’ll find our blog posts about these incredible microbes. They’ve been studied in so many contexts, and alongside so many different conditions, that we decided to do them justice we needed to break the research down into individual articles. That’s why here you’ll find that each article will explore one microbe, and one area of research it has been studied in, for a clear breakdown of what was found and what it means for you.

What you’ll find here*

LGG - An Icon.

Probably the most iconic bacterium in the world of probiotic study. LGG has almost four decades of human research behind it, with upwards of 250 human clinical trials, and is often used today as the benchmark to compare other bacteria to. It was originaly discovered in a human gut sample, so it's a naturally occuring gut bacterium. Studies exploring digestive balance, including use alongside antibiotics and in upset tummies, effects on the immune system, allergies, cognition and the gut-brain axis, traveller’s health, and settings in early life, these are just some of the contexts in which this microbe has been studied. Many of these trials are randomised, double-blind and placebo-controlled for the highest standard research and evidence you can trust.

BB-12 - A Bifido Titan.

Probably the most heavily studied Bifidobacterium in the world, BB12 was discovered in the 1980's from a cultured dairy sample, and has been the subject of decades of study ever since, with a backing of over 200 human studies today. Studies on gut balance and recovery around antibiotic use, immune/respiratory outcomes and seasonal wellness, bowel regularity, H. pylori therapy as an adjunct, infant colic, and early oral-microbiome findings are amongst some of the fascinating research into this bacterium.

So Who Conducted These Studies?

It’s important to note that none of the scientific studies quoted here have been conducted by, funded by, or otherwise affiliated with, BetterGuts or Strain Supplements Ltd. These studies have all been conducted by independent research bodies around the world. Organisations from a range of different countries and cultures, some of them medical institutions, some universities, some other organisations, have undertaken research into these bacteria. Both of these bacteria were first identified in the 1980’s, and so have a good 3 decades of research behind them! Not only that, but a good portion of this research has met the highest standards in medical clinical testing.

All of this means that not only is this research of the highest quality, but it’s been conducted by independent research bodies. No bias, no slant, just clear science you can trust.
